Summer is still in swing and it’s the perfect time to host picnics. Whether you’re having one on the beach, your backyard, or at the park, every picnic requires a few key items. With these tips/steps you’ll be able to throw a great sustainable picnic complete with all the essentials for prepared and on the go (OTG) entertaining.

  • Make a Day of It
      • Pick a meeting place and if you want, make it a surprise for your guests. Give them clues throughout the week and the day of the picnic that will help them find the location of the picnic.
      • Need a way to get there? Bike to your picnic – it’s eco-friendly and you’ll get some exercise.
      • Location, location, location! Location is always important…pick a place that all of your guests will enjoy!
  • Picnic Essentials
      • Pack light, so your picnic basket attaches to your bike.
          • Made by the Peterboro Basket company, this Lands’ End Bike Picnic Basket attaches to your bike and is woven from strong Appalachian White Ash. It’s cute, durable, and useful!
      • Keep it Cool
          • An easy-to-carry Lands’ End canvas cooler that’s great for transporting food and drinks anywhere. It also has a leakproof plastic liner, making it the perfect tote for picnics.
          • Instead of using cooler packs, make your own out of water and storage bags.
      • All the Comforts of Home
          • A Lands’ End blanket that can be used anywhere, this blanket has an area of nearly 40 sq. ft. It comes with four stakes to secure the corners, and folds into a corner pocket for easy carrying.
          • L.L. Bean Self-inflating cushions for each guest to sit on. They’re light and compact…all you have to do is open the valve and it inflates on its own!
      • Ditch the Paper
          • Use flatware and dinnerware that are multipurpose, recyclable, compostable and all natural.
              • Made only of fallen palm leaves, steam, heat and pressure, this VerTerra dinnerware and cutlery is biodegradable and BPI-certified 100% compostable.
              • Preserve cutlery and cups that are made of 100% recycled #5 plastic, are 100% recyclable, dishwasher safe, BPA and melamine free.
              • iHeart Parts that start as a heart and you break it open to reveal two forks, two knives, and two scoops (designed for sharing!). They’re biodegradable, reusable, and can be thrown in the dishwasher!
          • Pack smart by using dividable eco-friendly storage bags (try ecozip!).
          • Napkins made out of cotton that are reusable and compostable. MYdrap is made of  100% cotton fibers, is biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable. Comes in an array of colors and patterns and are perforated on a roll for easy tear-off convenience.
  • Chic-nic Menu
      • Spread of Spreads
          • Choose an array of spreads – perhaps one that’s cheese, meat, or veggie…mix it up depending on what you and your guests like!
      • Deconstructed Sandwiches – place meats and cheeses in your ecozip bags for transport. Use the bags for different types of breads as well and your guests will be able to make their own sandwiches!
      • Fresh frozen fruits -  freeze your fruits overnight in baggies. They’ll be ready to go and by the time you get to your picnic, they’ll still be cool.
      • Haute Hydration
          • Add a little flair to your water (healthy tasting hydration) with an Aqua zinger  or Citrus zinger .  Both water bottles allow you to infuse your water with your favorite flavors and are travel-friendly, so you can fill up wherever you are.
